The Chinese woman is not so well known to fans of mixed martial arts, despite the status of the reigning champion. Zhang, 30, has been fighting mixed-style fights since 2013. She signed a contract with the UFC in August 2018 and received a title fight with a (3-0) record. The factor of her belonging to China turned out to be important, as the UFC leadership expands its sphere of influence on the Asian market, and having a local fighter as the owner of the belt is extremely beneficial.
In the UFC, Weili celebrated victories over Danielle Taylor, Jessica Aguilar, Tecia Torres and champion Jessica Andrade. It’s impressive that Brazilian Zhang finished in just 42 seconds. The professional record of a Chinese consists of 21 fights, 20 wins and one defeat. By the way, Weili has not lost since 2013. She also has experience in kickboxing (record 2-1).
Zhang is distinguished by great physical strength, ability to break through heavy kicks and good stamina. Weili exerts total pressure and makes the opponents make mistakes. The Chinese athlete knocked out ten opponents, and seven won by submission. In wrestling terms, the champion is also able to compete with the best representatives of the minimum weight.
The 32-year-old Polish will try to regain the lost belt and become the two-time UFC flyweight champion. The main problem for Joanna is to keep within the division limit. Jedrzejczyk has serious difficulties to show 52.2 kg on the day of weighing. The Polish athlete spent 19 battles and won 16 wins. Joanna won against Jessica Andrade, Michelle Waterson, Tishi Torres, Carolina Kovalkevich, Claudia Gadella. Over the past two years, Jedrzejczyk lost to Rose Namajunas (twice) and Valentina Shevchenko.
Joanna is the record holder for thrown punches in the minimum weight history. The Pole works with exceptionally quick and easy combinations, stopping rivals with counterpunches and low-kicks. In emergency cases, Jedrzejczyk uses grappling skills. When the ex-champion is in shape, it’s very difficult to go through five rounds with her because of her crazy pace and phenomenal endurance.
Joanna’s striking power is not impressive, so it’s hard to say how she will keep Zhang at bay. Jedrzejczyk knocked out only four opponents. At the same time, the Pole has a lot of experience in five-round fights (7 times). The height of the former champion is 167 cm with a arm span of 165 cm. Joanna’s slight advantage in anthropometry is unlikely to seriously affect the battle.
Zhang vs Jedrzejczyk Prediction
The bookmakers have opened the first odds for the title fight in the women’s minimum weight, and their favorite is Weili Zhang.
Joanna passed Waterson, but this does not mean that she can afford to return the championship belt. The new formation of fighters is too strong for champions of past years, as can be seen on the example of almost all UFC divisions. Zhang has the necessary skills to beat the experienced Polish girl. This time, Jedrzejczyk will face a completely different level of physical strength and endurance.
- Our prediction: Weili Zhang Will Win.
