The Armed Forces Bowl takes place this Saturday (Jan. 4th, 11:30 AM ET) at Amon G. Carter Stadium in Fort Worth, Texas, pitting the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles (7-5, 5-3 C-USA) against the Tulane Green Wave (6-6, 3-5 AAC).
Southern Miss Golden Eagles (7-5, 6-6 ATS)
At the beginning of the game with a score of 5: 1, the Golden Eagles fought for the title of “Conference of the USA” before they finished the regular season with a couple of defeats. After losing 28–10 at home in Western Kentucky as a 3-point favorite, South Miss lost 34–17 at the Florida Atlantic in her season finale.
The Golden Eagles kept the FAU in just 12 first drops and 156 passing yards, but five turns of South Miss quarterback Jack Abraham directly led to several Owl points. Abraham struggled to defend the ball in each of his first two seasons with the southern miss, throwing 25 interceptions and losing seven balls. In the last five games, he also dropped seven peaks to five touchdowns.
However, the southern miss can go well with Tulane because of how effectively the golden eagles protect the run. This season, the USM allowed only 111.8 yards per game on the field and did not concede more than 151 in any of its last eight appearances – which is a good omen against Green Wave’s swift attack on 13th place.
Tulane Green Wave (6-6, 8-4 ATS)
For the Green Wave, 2019 was a tale of two seasons. The first half of the campaign was promising, as Tulane won five of his first six, alone loss came to Auburn as a 15-point loser. These conditions were thwarted since the Green Wave lost five of its last six – although the tight schedule was certainly a factor.
All five of these losses were directed against the opposition (Memphis, Navy, Temple, Central Florida and the South Methodist Organization), and three of them were taken in one possession. Tulane was a loser in four of the last six games, passing 3-3 ATS.
Due to a wrist injury, Tulane may not be able to run away, head coach Corey Dauphin. However, the Green Wave ground attack spread the ball throughout the year, when six different players relieved the ball 30 or more times. Quarterback Justin Macmillan was Tulane’s lead musketeer, scoring 704 yards and scoring 12 TD on the ground as Green Wave ended the season with nearly 3,000 running yards.
Tulane was also very effective in the red zone, gaining 39 out of 44 trips within the enemy’s 20-yard line (including 33 touchdowns).
