Scott McTominay believes every European Qualifier is a cup last before the fixtures against Russia and Belgium this past week of Scotland.
Steve Clarke’s staff sit in Group I on six points after defeats to Kazakhstan along with Monday’s competitions Belgium, but the Manchester United midfielder insists Scotland can nevertheless be eligible.
He said:”You just need to take every game for a cup final, and it’s extremely important for all of us to keep building on the progress we have shown under the new gaffer and I feel like it’s two large games where you can look at it in two different ways.
“It’s a must-win and it is unquestionably a must-not lose too, so that I feel like you have to take responsibility about the pitch first of all.
“We’re not going to pay for anything less than people having a right go, but of course that’s up to the supervisor and the training team with how they put us up along with the different ways they need to approach the game.”
McTominay says that players have begun to adopt and his impact is one he is looking forward to.
He added:”It’s incredibly important for us to keep building on the progress we have shown beneath the new gaffer.
“All of the players have bought into everything he’s saying, and all his manners on and off the pitch are all somewhat different and it is definitely very favorable to have someone of that size handling the national group and it is exciting.”
The 22-year-old, that has established all United’s Premier League matches this season, says he intends to continue also preserving that results for United so far have not been what the team have deserved, in addition to improving for both club and country.
“For myself I have just been concentrating on enjoying as much football as I possibly can, and learning as much as I can from the training team, both in my parent club and at Scotland too,” McTominay said.
“It is exciting times for me but it’s just about maintaining a level head and wanting to keep progressing at the manner that you’re moving.”
He continued:”I feel like we have been unlucky with some of the outcomes that we have had, and obviously I’m now aware I’m an international and they are the matches I’m solely focused on in this moment in time.
“However, at club level we have been unlucky with a couple of choices and a couple of ways that the outcome of the matches have gone, but as I mention it’s important for all of us to return to a flying start using Scotland as well.”
