Denis Irwin believes Manchester United’s hopes of a year rest on the shoulders of Paul Pogba.
Even the France World Cup winning midfielder ended last year with 13 goals, while also topping the standings assists with eight.
Former United defender Irwin insists Pogba includes a fearless attitude which is a must for Gunnar’s Solskjaer’s side to improve last season.
“There isn’t too many gamers of Paul’s quality,” Irwin said. “He has lots of players in front of him who have great pace and I believe he’s got the understanding of being able to choose a excellent pass.
“We need consistency out of him but going forward today and particularly where we have started controlling games he is likely to be a big, big player for us.
“I think every team wants a risk taker but I look at him and believe he’s the one that could unlock doors.
“We have created enough chances to win matches so he’s going to be vitally important for us.”
United have picked up four points from their opening five matches, leaving them in eighth place going into the break.
They were forced to settle for a draw off on Saturday, leaving them without a win since their opening day.
But, Irwin is convinced his former side are currently heading in the ideal direction and says that fans need to accept the procedure will take time.
“I know that we’ve only picked two points up from three games but it feels like we ought to have more,” Irwin added.
“We may need to take a little bit of patience and also we might not challenge the initial two this season but surely we need to be up there and greater than annually.
United will probably be sweating on the fitness of summer signing Aaron Wan Bissaka, who was forced to withdraw from England’s group on Tuesday.
The 21-year-old has amazed because his #50m move from Crystal Palace, also Irwin considers Wan Bissaka and fellow summertime addition Harry Maguire will reinforce a United defence that conceded last season to 54 goals.
“His positional sense looks really, really great,” Irwin explained.
“That’s a huge surprise for somebody who has been a winger for many years. He has got a great deal to understand but he’s been a big plus this year.
“We will need to begin keeping clean sheets again but I believe we’ve started making steps in the perfect way in assisting in our defensive work, I truly do.”
