How to read NBA odds

Winner Odds. Moneyline Explained

A moneyline (most common term in US) bet in an NBA game is a bet on which team will win the game directly, regardless of the distribution of points.

The favorite in the game has a negative moneyline, for example: -160. The loser has a positive moneyline, for example: +125. Odds represent payouts at a rate of $ 100. Thus, for a -160 favorite, a player would bet $160 to win $100. For a loser at +125, a player bet $100 to win $125.

Again, the players on the moneyline are simply trying to choose which team will win the game. A moneyline is an agreed rate payout.

This type implies a bet on the outcome of the match at the end of normal time or on the winner of the match, taking into account overtime. Drawn in basketball is a rare exception, which is one of the main advantages of this type of bet. At the same time, for bets on the outcome of a match, offices always offer odds several times higher than for bets on the victory of one of the teams. A feature of the North American leagues (NBA and NCAA) is that they mainly offer bets exclusively on the outcome of matches taking into account overtime. For other events, the coefficient for betting on the winner is not significantly lower than for betting on his victory in regular time, so it makes sense to choose such offers. Betting on the winner in individual quarters is also offered.

NBA Point Spreads  (Handicap) Explained

Basketball betting is often represented by several lines with different handicaps or point spreads (most common term in US). You should know that the handicap values here can differ dramatically. For example, depending on the strength of the teams, before the start of the match the bookmaker may offer both – 2.5 and – 25.5.

Point Spread – usually called the “spread” or “handicap” – is the number assigned by sportsbooks to represent the difference in points between the two teams for betting purposes. The purpose of the spread is not to predict how many points a particular team will score. Instead, the scatter of points is intended to create a situation where half of the bets involved in the game belong to one team and the other half to the other. (This is called a “balanced action”).

A team with a negative number is considered a favorite. Example: -6.5 A team with a positive number is considered an outsider (underdog or dog). Example: +6.5

The favorite team needs to win the game more than the assigned scatter value in order to cash out the ticket. For example, if the Los Angeles Clippers are -3.5 versus the Los Angeles Lakers, they need to win four or more points to overcome the scatter of points. Conversely, a player accepting a Lakers loser in this example needs Clippers to either win immediately or lose three or less points.

NBA Totals or Over/Under Explained

This type of betting is a feature of basketball betting. Leading bookmakers offer odds for matches with a huge number of variations of totals. Before the start of the match, at least three totals with a different number of points for the total result of the match will be offered in the betting lines. Bettors players can place Over/Under bets on different totals, for example, 175-199 points will be scored in a match.

Totals are accepted both for individual quarters, and for the entire match, and for the number of penalties, fouls, and three-point goals, etc. Serious bookmakers offer a whole market of totals for individual basketball players, among the main offers here are the number of points scored, fouls, three-pointer balls, etc.

A positive feature for the player is the not very noticeable dependence of the rate on random goals, which in the same football or hockey are of great importance. In basketball, the total of matches, compared to the mentioned sports, is simply huge and, as a rule, is in the range from 150 to 230 points.

In this regard, the offer of acquiring a total or handicap by a few points in the office is also attractive, since the coefficient does not practically drop. Despite the fact that in football, with an increase in handicap even by a point, as a rule, the office will offer a much lower coefficient, which will accordingly reduce the winning amount by several times.

A feature of basketball totals is the fact that it is desirable to have several sportsbooks at hand and to compare odds lines before each bet. In the event that the total set by the office as the main one differs by 3 or more points, then in this match the corridor of totals will apply the strategy correctly.

NBA Futures Odds Explained

NBA futures Odds are odds of eventual results regarding certain teams. For example, a NBA championship futures bet is a bet on which team will win the NBA title. Other types of NBA futures bets can involve the number of wins that a team achieves during the season, betting on which team wins their specific division, or betting on which team will win the conference title.

The odds on NBA futures bets are generally expressed similar to a moneyline. For example, the Orlando Magic could be posted at +1800 to win the NBA championship. That means that a $100 wager would yield $1,800 if Chicago won the NBA championship.
