Keno is a popular game that is based on the well-known lottery and is played by many players, especially on the Internet in online casinos. We explain the Keno rules, give tips and tricks and show the best online casinos for Keno.
If you are not deterred by the low winning probability of 1 in 140 million, you will love online Keno even more. With comparatively low stakes, the hope of winning a million remains, but the odds are slightly better with online Keno for this luck with 1 to 84 million.
The numbers are drawn from a round air blower, also called a gooseneck. The order of the numbers is unimportant. If one of the numbers you have typed falls during the drawing, the payout is already made.
At Casino Keno you decide how many numbers you want to bet on. There are various restrictions on the number of numbers you can play, but the absolute maximum number of numbers you can play is usually 20. The more numbers you play, the higher your payout can be, and the more numbers you play, the less likely you are to win.
BETTING OPTIONS IN KENO
The amount and chances of your winnings are directly related to how you place your bets. The rules of Keno open up a wide variety of betting opportunities. These somewhat complicated options create exactly the excitement and fascination that distinguishes Keno, and that makes this traditional game different from traditional lottery probabilities (besides the much better odds).
This is the way to bet in Keno:
The standard form. You select the desired numbers and wait for the draw. Usually up to 20 numbers are allowed. However, there are some variants of the Keno rule that allow up to 40 numbers.
You can combine groups of direct bets on a ticket in different ways. Each possible combination is considered a single bet.
Here you bet two or more games on the same Keno ticket. To do this, you choose two groups of numbers and mark them with circles or a line. For example, if you bet 4 USD per group, the total bet is 8 USD. There is no disadvantage in playing with a split ticket instead of playing with several straight tickets. In some casinos split tickets are even cheaper.
Way Tickets is the most complex use that the cinema rules allow. First, you decide how many combinations of numbers you want to play from the selected number combinations, and then you must bet them on the same Keno ticket. Now you have to use fractions to calculate the cost to the right of the betting area. This is a bit more complicated, but it also gives you the best odds of winning in Keno.
King Tickets are a variation of Way Tickets. Here you can name one or more numbers as “King” numbers. These numbers are circled separately while the groups remain. This gives them an even higher chance of winning the right numbers.
Online Keno Rules
The simplicity of the concept offers an ideal basis for making Keno a special gaming experience online. There is a multitude of variants and technical features. You can choose between a virtual version of the printed card or just the 70 or 80 numbers.
If you wish, you can supplement your game with a variety of effects (applauding masses, falling balls, bets placed by dealers, etc.), bringing online Keno even closer to the atmosphere in a real casino. However, the main difference with a live casino is that you can control the speed of the game yourself.
Played calmly and with concentration, this can be a great advantage for you, but it can also prove to be the decisive disadvantage for your capital. If you play 30 times as many games as in a casino (which is easily possible), you can of course lose 30 times as fast. So always act in a controlled manner, even if the rising adrenaline level in your body suggests otherwise.
Video Keno is played like a slot machine: screen and a special keyboard. It is usually less expensive than live Keno, but follows the usual Keno rules. Take advantage of the low stakes, but play one coin or credit at a time.
The only time you should play with maximum credits is when there is a big progressive jackpot to win. Video Keno has a lower house advantage than live Keno, but the game is played much faster. If you let yourself go in Video Keno, you could end up giving the house a pretty big advantage.
Just take your time, sit low and play Video Keno at a comfortable pace.
Having already outlined the rules of keno, we will now explain the main features of the keno strategy.
Look around you!
If you already know that you will be going to an area of the casino that offers Keno, you may want to do some online research before you go. Some sites show Keno payouts for different groups and you can compare casinos before deciding where to invest your Keno money.
The payouts in keno vary from casino to casino. Take a look around. Look for the places with the best payouts. You should always look around and compare the payout tables before you sit down and play.
Promos & Comp Points:
Whether online or live, there are always offers and promotions you can use for your game. Loyalty points or VIP systems can also be offered in conjunction with Keno. You should use these advantages to limit your losses and play with donated money or get money back.
Keno is a random game. You cannot beat Keno in the long run by using a betting system or any other tactical strategy. Keno is purely random, that’s how the Keno rules are designed. Just enjoy the game. Don’t think too much into it and don’t try to break the Keno code. Just think of the game as a form of entertainment and play for fun.
Just pick a few numbers!
Keno is a lottery. There are no skills involved. The more numbers you pick, the worse the odds get. Staying with a small number of numbers is the best way to play the game. Although this is not always the case, the odds tend to appear at about nine numbers. Picking more or less gives the casino a progressively greater advantage.
This is not always the case, but it happens relatively often. Typing nine or fewer numbers usually gives a house edge of less than 5%.
Keep an eye on the board!
It’s easy to get overly comfortable in the Keno lounge of a real casino. When playing live keno, make sure you always keep an eye on the big board while sipping your drinks.
Probability of winning American Keno
Let us now look at the Keno variant that is common in the American world, where 20 numbers between 1 and 80 are drawn. With most providers you can mark numbers between 2 and 12. The odds of winning vary depending on the number of numbers you tick. In the following table, we have listed the Keno odds for tips of up to 15 numbers, but the tips up to 10 are especially relevant, because more numbers are usually not selectable.

KENO ODDS – PROBABILITIES IN KENO
In Keno with 70 numbers, there are not quite infinite numbers, but according to the Keno rules, there are 3,535,316,142,212,175,000 (3.5 trillion) different combinations of how to draw 20 numbers.
Some probability values
- Chance that none will be drawn for 5 selected numbers: 22.7%
- Chance that all 5 selected numbers are drawn: 0.1%
- Chance that none will be drawn for 2 selected numbers: 56%
- Chance that both numbers are drawn if 2 numbers are selected: 6%.
- Chance of 7 out of 14 selected numbers being drawn: 7%
- Chance that all 14 selected numbers are drawn: 0.00000000257%
As with the lottery, the chances of winning a huge prize are rather small in Keno. You will find all the odds of winning Keno with 70 and 80 numbers in the upper tables.
However, there is a clear advantage here: in Keno you can choose as many numbers as you like. And unlike the traditional lottery, you can win by drawing one or two correct numbers.
The chances of winning depend on how many numbers you choose:
HOW MANY NUMBERS TO DIAL
The chances of winning depend on how many numbers you dial:
- The more numbers you pick, the more must be drawn correctly to get a payout.
- If you select fewer numbers, you are more likely to win – but fewer.
- If you pick a lot of numbers, you will hardly hit all or only a few – but the payout is very high.
EXAMPLE OF KENO ODDS
A popular Keno strategy is to choose a number of points on the high side but closer to the middle, such as 8, 9 or 10.
A simple payout table, if you choose 9 numbers, could be as follows:
1 point: Pays 1-to-2.
5 points: Pays 3-to-1
6 points: Pays 40-to-1
7 points: Pays 300-to-1
8 points: Pays 4000-to-1
9 points: Pays 37,500-to-1
The chances to hit a certain number of points:
4 points – at about 8-to-1
5 points – at about 30-to-1
6 points – at 174-to-1
7 points – at 1700-to-1
8 points – at about 30,000 to 1
9 points – at over a million-to-1
ANALYSIS OF THE KENO ODDS
As you can see, the odds are not necessarily favorable for the player. But, similar to slot machines, it is a matter of the relationship between the stake and the possible payout.
The attraction is to be able to bet 2 USD and win thousands of dollars – even if it is unlikely according to the current Keno rules.
KENO PAYOUT TABLES
Let’s take a look at the detailed payout tables of Keno. How much is paid out for which hits depends on the casino and the provider, but most of them have relatively uniform rules.
The payout is based on a stake of one dollar. For higher stakes the payout must be multiplied accordingly. The house advantage indicates what percentage the provider retains in the long run for the respective bet.

Almost legendary is the passion of the Chinese for gambling. Officially, gambling is currently banned in China (with the exception of the special district of Macau), but nothing impresses the otherwise rather pragmatic Chinese more than casinos, gambling houses and the lure of lucrative gambling winnings.
In order to circumvent this ban on the mainland, the Chinese use a ruse. Instead of playing for money, they play for sunflowers; the bill is settled later.
More than 2000 years ago, the Chinese warlord Cheung Lung used the unbridled gambling addiction of his countrymen for his monetary interests, and thus his innovative idea formed the basis for today’s Keno.
After years of war, the inhabitants of his city refused to provide further capital for weapons and other supplies. In order to raise the necessary funds, Cheung Leung (about 200 BC) created a lottery-like game of chance in which he did not use numbers but the first 120 characters of a Chinese poem.
For the “white doves game”, as it was then called, pigeons were used as lucky fairies, which picked the winning symbols from a stack with their beaks. Each player received a card with the relevant characters on which they could select ten characters using an ink brush. The game was such a huge success that the excess money could even be used to finance parts of the Great Wall of China.
As part of their traditions, Chinese migrant workers (mainly used as cheap labor in railway construction) took this game to the United States in the mid-19th century.
The “white dove game” was renamed the “Chinese lottery” and quickly gained popularity, especially in San Francisco.
Over the years, 80 numbers replaced the original 120 Chinese characters, thus laying the foundation for the modern lottery.
In America, Keno is still played with 80 numbers even in its present form
In the purist USA not only the alcohol prohibition existed until 1933 but also lotteries were considered illegal in most states. Since sports betting was not affected by this prohibition, Keno was renamed Horserace Keno, and the rules were changed so that Keno now resembled a horse race. The numbers now corresponded to horses, and the numbers drawn were consistent with the entry bet, where the correct order of first-placed horses is typed on the betting slip.
Keno’s former association with horse racing is still recognizable in the specific slang of the keno community today. Players betting the same number on multiple Keno cards play multi-race tickets, and the individual draws are still called races.
After Prohibition, Horserace Keno was renamed Keno, and when the first mechanical keno machine was invented in 1936, there was no casino in America that did not use this winning game of chance.
With the steadily increasing number of online casinos, Keno is slowly establishing itself as a game of chance that inspires its fans. Many Keno variants with different Keno rules that seemed to have been forgotten for centuries are now being revived. Online Keno promises the highest playing pleasure without spatial limits!
By the way, Keno is not a Chinese word according to its etymological origin, but is derived from the French word “quine”. “Quine” refers to the five correct numbers in the “Quninterne” – the oldest European version of Lotto.
