Hull KR have announced that Australian Josh Drinkwater will depart the club at the end of the season, together with fellow half-back James Greenwood and forwards Chris Atkin.
Atkin and Greenwood’s departures was expected and the former has already secured a contract with Salford.
But Drinkwater’s departure was sudden, especially with his own half-back partner Danny McGuire.
Drinkwater has started every match for Rovers since joining them at the beginning of the season in Catalans Dragons to a one-year deal.
Atkin has just had a bit-part function for much of the effort, while Greenwood was sidelined since March with a knee injury.
Hull KR head coach Tony Smith, who signed a fresh three-year contract in the weekend, also said:”I have loved my time with all three of these young men concerning working alongside them.
“Unfortunately, I haven’t had a chance to coach James but he’s been a pleasure around the place and a professional with respect to how he’s been rehabbing.
“Chris and Josh have been enormous and I wish them well in their careers.”
Drinkwater and Atkin have been all set to play their game for the Robins at Craven Park against London Broncos on Friday as soon as the Yorkshire club have a chance to protect their Super League survival – live on Sky Sports.
Atkin and his old boss Ian Watson will join when he joins the Red Devils at the end of the season.
“I’m extremely excited,” he said. “Watto was that the one who brought me at Swinton and gave me my very professional debut.
“Ever since then, I have always wanted to use him and this opportunity has come up and I’m really looking forward to it and feeling determined to return to it.
“He is a really terrific coach and he’s proved that this season.”
