Granada CF

It was only the four times in its history that Granada reached the semi-finals of the Spanish Cup. In the final of the tournament the Andalusians went so far only once, and it was in the distant season 1958-1959. In the finals, they without much trouble with a score of 4-1 defeated Barcelona.

On the way to the semifinals Granada won all five previous duels at least, and in three rounds to determine the strongest it took an overtime (in games with L’Hospitalet, Badalona and Badajoz), a modest club Tamaraceite was defeated 1-0, and Valencia team Diego Martínez at home beated 2-1.

Even if Granada will not be able to reach the final of the Copa del Rey, Diego Martínez and his team for this season still can and should be praised. Granada did not get lost after returning to the elite division, looking better than other newcomers of the season, Osasuna and Mallorca. At the moment, the Andalusians are in ninth place in the La Liga table, slightly behind the teams from the European Cup area, but most importantly – Granada has a very decent gap from the departure area, so the task for the season (keeping a residence permit in the elite) Martinez team has completed, we can talk about it now.

After the defeat in Bilbao, Granada scored seven points in the next three matches of the Spanish championship. First, Granada got a tough victory over Valladolid 2-1 (Carlos Fernandez scored a winning goal in the 6th compensated minute), then defeated Osasuna in Pamplona (3:0), and last weekend the semifinished lineup played at Nuevo Estadio de Los Carmenes in a draw with Celta (0-0), and at the very end of the game had a killer’s chance to pull out victories (after a shot by Antonio Puertas the ball rolled along the goal line from one bar to another and flew into the field).

Athletic Bilbao

Athletic is historically a real cup fighter. Basques 37 times played in the final of the Cup of the King and won 23 trophies. Most of the successes, though, happened a long time ago, but history as we know often tends to repeat. In the new century Athletic only three times reached the final of the Copa del Rey, and each time lost to Barcelona, with a difference of two or more balls. And the last Cup at the moment Athletic won the season 1983- 84

Athletic first warmed up on the Intercity (3:0) and Sestao River (4:0) – but in matches against Elche and Tenerife from Segunda Division it came to a series of penalties. The loudest victory so far in the Cup of King was obtained in the quarter-finals, beating Barcelona in Bilbao with a score of 1:0, scoring a goal (or rather, an auto-goal scored Busquets) in the last seconds added to the main time.

In the first semi-final of the current draw of the tournament Athletic in Bilbao won with a score of 1:0. The team of Gaizka Garitano could have won even bigger, but failed to realize it. Meanwhile, the refereeing team canceled two more goals of the home team. The Basque team won the first half of the home game, but managed to score only one goal (Williams’ handoff saw Muniain distinguish himself). And then Granada dug even deeper into their half of the field, not thinking much about counterattacks.

Granada vs Athletic Prediction

Before the first match there was little doubt that it would end in a victory for the hosts. But it’s somehow difficult to give an unambiguous prediction for the return game. Athletic knows how to calm the game down, make the opponent play by their rules, but also the Basques are very good at counterattacks. Scored ball will allow the Basques not only to gain an additional advantage due to the away goal rule, but also to get space for quick attacks.

Granada does not allow the whole game to sit in defense. Unless the hosts score a quick goal and then decide to play with extreme caution. Otherwise, time will play against them. And it seems that the fight should be tense, emotional, but not particularly spectacular. Athletic in recent months has consistently scored on the road, and almost always concedes (matches with opponents from the fourth division do not count).

Granada can be considered a home team. Yes, the Andalusians suffered several defeats at Nuevo Los Carmenes this season, but in most of the matches on their home field they looked very solid. And here the motivation will be simply off the charts.
