Since 2016, the NHL all-star match has been held in the form of a mini-tournament in which teams from the Central, Atlantic, Capital and Pacific divisions participate. First, in the semifinals, representatives of the NHL Eastern Conference (Atlantic and Metropolitan) meet, and then Western Conference (Central and Pacific). The winners reach the final, where they play the main trophy and a prize of $ 1 million.
The sparing mode of the match of all NHL stars implies 2 periods of 10 minutes in 3×3 format. In the event of a tie, the teams carry out a series of shootouts.
All-Star Game Teams
The determination of the compounds was as follows. First, the fans chose the captains of the divisions, who later on recruited themselves teams. At the end of the selection of captains, the fans added one more player to each team by their own vote. As a result, the following compositions were obtained:
Representatives of the Central Division have never won a match of all NHL stars in a new format. However, analysts consider this team to be the main favorites of the tournament.
There is a simple explanation for the status of the favorite of the Central Division team: all the hockey players selected by voting confirmed their participation. No other team has such unanimity.
- Captain: Nathan Raymond MacKinnon (Colorado Avalanche)
- Coach: Craig Berube St. Louis Blues
An emergency situation occurred in the camp of the Pacific Division: Gerard Gallant, who worked at Vegas, was initially selected as the head coach. But on January 15, the mentor was fired from the Knights, and therefore had to look for an urgent replacement in the match of all NHL stars. The team will now be led by Rick Tocchet .
The Pacific Division won the match of all stars in the new format 2 times: in 2016 and in 2018. A team led by McDavid can make a kind of treble.
- Captain: Connor McDavid (Edmonton Oilers)
- Coach: Rick Tocchet (Arizona Coyotes)
As part of the Atlantic division, the only representative of Russia will speak at the NHL 2020 all-star game: Andrei Vasilevsky (Tampa Bay) will take a place in the goal. The goalkeeper got into the match, replacing a colleague from Boston Tuukka Rask, who was injured.
Like the Central Division, the Atlantic has never won a match of all NHL stars in the new format, although it played twice in the finals of the mini-tournament.
Initially, Alexander Ovechkin was chosen as the captain of the team of the Metropolitan Division to vote. But the Russian again (for the third time in his career) refused to take part in the match of all NHL stars, for which he was already given a one-match suspension in the regular season.
The difficulties of the Metropolitan do not end there: due to an injury at the tournament, another Russian striker Artemy Panarin will not perform (he was replaced by Chris Krider). In total, the team of Todd Rirden has 5 failures, so the bookmakers gave the Capital Division the role of the main outsider of the NHL 2020 all-star game.
Even without Alexander Ovechkin, the Metropolitan Division won the all-star match last season. In total, the team has won 2 victories since 2016 (2017 and 2019).
- Captain: Kris Letang (Pittsburgh Penguins)
- Coach: Todd Reirden (Washington Capitals)

Already traditionally semifinal pairs are as follows: Central Division – Pacific Division, Atlantic Division – Capital Division. In such combinations, the teams met 4 times. In a pair, the Central and Pacific advantage are on the side of the Pacific Division, who won in three matches (9-6, 10-3 and 5-2) with one defeat 4-10.
In the second pair, each of the rivals has two victories, the Metropolitan Division won their matches with a score of 10-6 and 7-4, the Atlantic 4-3 and 7-4. In terms of the number of final victories, the two teams had the same indicators, twice the tournament, held in the new format, was won by the Pacific and Central divisions.
2020 All-Star Game Prediction
Do not discount the fact that such events are more indicative. In such a situation, it is practically impossible to analyze the real chances of the teams to win, so we will focus on our own intuition, which prompts us to pay attention to the team of the Pacific Division.
Initially, it is clear that a three-by-three game implies that the individual skill of the attackers will be decisive and a couple of Pacific forward strikers – Dreisaitle and McDavid – stand out. Both forwards play on the same link in Edmonton, which means you don’t have to worry about teamwork.
They also lead the regular championship scoring race, having 75 and 76 points in their account, respectively. We dare to assume that the presence of such a duet seriously increases the chances of the final success of the Pacific Division.
- Our prediction is the first place — Pacific Division.
